Police patrol Nairobi streets

By Murage Muya ( Wednesday, July 20, 2005)

More anti-riot police officers have been deployed to the streets of Nairobi to quell any riots by civil society demonstrators who vowed to continue protesting.

Heavily armed officers are stationed along Harambee Avenue, Parliament Road, City Hall Way and parts of Uhuru highway. Water cannon trucks are also stationed strategically near Vigilance House.

Nairobi Provincial Police Chief King'ori Mwangi says the presence of the officers is meant to keep away any groups participating in an illegal assembly or demonstration in Nairobi.

He says anyone found participating the demonstrations will be arrested and charged, because no group has notified them of any intended assembly.

King'ori says five civil society members were arrested and questioned before they were released from custody on Tuesday.
